We Believe that travelling is one of the best ways of learning. We arrange Travel Studio programmes twice every year to make learning more exciting!

The foundation focuses on making travelling learning. Travel Studio programmes are carefully crafted to make them a learning experience while maintaining the fun of being away from home. Usually, these programmes involve intense travelling between unseen places in India which are of immense heritage value. The programme includes mapping activities, documentation activities, seminars, workshops, expert lectures and debates and discussions on a wide range of topics. Till now we have conducted travel studio programmes at Pondicherry, Karnataka, Manali, Dharamshala, Ahmedabad, Kutch, and Madhya Pradesh. Varanasi, Mandu, Maheshwar, Tamilnadu.

I had an amazing experience traveling with urban arch group. We could explore historical places at ease. Accommodation facility was excellent. Regarding food, we managed to have food at best possible places. Architect Shaunak provided many intricate details of monuments wherever needed. Beautiful places, awesome delicacies and lovely co travellers, I had during this trip.I booked trip at the last moment but they accommodated me without any extra charges. Shaunak made sure that non architect travellers are not left out and in few hours we could gel in the group. In short, I had memorable trip. He took our suggestions into consideration when it came to food and exploring any other new place. Would definitely like to travel once again.

Who could explain the idea of Home the way Architect Doshi did ?
.
We were never taught by Doshi, but it always felt that he was our teacher. It was his quotes that inspired us, it was his projects that we studied. His was the name most frequently spoken in Architecture schools along with Late Correa. Ahmedabad meant CEPT to us and CEPT meant Doshi to us. I only saw him once inside the campus, sitting in a Kurla-Varkey jury. But every time I visited the CEPT Campus, it was always “Doshi ne kya banaya hai yaar”. it was as if he was there in the form of the whole FA building! Doshi became part of our conversations for so long that maybe we never really thought he could die one day. And hence this news, news of his demise hurts us all. It feels like a personal loss.

This will be an intensive 3 days workshop in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan which will focus on the Skills of Heritage Identification, Heritage Mapping and Architectural Sketching. Jaisalmer is a Heritage Town in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, India. This ancient town flourished over the course of time due to its prominent location on the trade route. It is one of the few Living Forts in the world where an entire city was built inside the fort walls. The Jaisalmer fort was built first in 1156 AD.

India’s Incredible Heritage.

Over 1000 years old sculptures recovered from various temple sites in Rajasthan.
These are the sculptures depicting various Hindu Deities, Mainly Lord Shiv and Goddess Parvati, The Trinity of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, and the last depicting Goddess Durga. These were recovered from various Heritage sites in the state of Rajasthan.

They are proof of our incredible heritage when our craftsmen knew how to put life in a stone!

The faces of these sculptures were mutilated during the brutal Islamic Invasion during which thousands of temples were destroyed. As Islam is against idol worshipping, usually idols were totally destroyed or their faces were mutilated.

It was designed by the renowned architect Charles Correa beginning in 1958. The museum, Correa’s first important commission, consisted originally of 51 modular units, each 6 x 6 metres, surrounding a water court. The complex was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1963.

Pushkar Lake or Pushkar Sarovar is located in the town of Pushkar near Ajmer city in the Ajmer district of the Rajasthan state of western India. Pushkar Lake is a sacred lake of the Hindus. The Hindu scriptures describe it as "Tirtha-Guru" – the preceptor of pilgrimage sites related to a water body and relate it to the mythology of the creator-god Brahma, whose most prominent temple stands in Pushkar. The Pushkar Lake finds mentioned on coins as early as the 4th century BC.

Pushkar Lake is surrounded by 52 bathing ghats, where pilgrims throng in large numbers to take a sacred bath, especially around Kartik Poornima when the Pushkar Fair is held. Over 500 Hindu temples are situated around the lake precincts

Ahmedabad or Amdavad which was historically referred as Karnavati is one of the largest cities in India and is a UNESCO world Heritage site. The present day Ahmedabad is believed to be established in 1411 CE by Ahmad Shah-1. Over the course of last 600 years, the city experienced layers of history and during this time some of the remarkable Architectural as well as Urban spaces came into existence. Even today, the city represents vibrant culture and a great affinity to Art and Architecture.

Post 1947, Ahmedabad became a canvas for India’s modernist expressions with Master Architects line Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Charles Correa, Anant Raje, B V Doshi (and many more) Building some of the most remarkable buildings of their career in the city.

Shri Rangnath Venugopal temple was constructed in 1823 by Seth Puran Mal Ganeriwal of Hyderabad. The temple complex consists of the idols of the presiding diety Lord Krishna and of Rangnath, Goddess Laxmi, Goddamaji and Shri Ramanujacharya. This is the first temple of the South India Ramanuja Sampradaya (a Vishnu sect) in Rajasthan and has an unique blend of Rajasthani and South Indian architecture. The Gopuram (entry gate) is in the South Indian style.

Pushkar is one of the oldest cities in India. Located to the northwest of Ajmer in the state of Rajasthan in Western India. Situated at a height of 510 metres, Pushkar is surrounded by hillocks on three sides. It’s a sacred town and one of the most crucial centres of Hindu Faith.

According to legends, Lord Brahma, believed to be the creator of the Universe dropped a lotus to the ground leading to the immediate creation of a lake. He then decided to name the place after the flower, and thus the name, Pushkar. The city of Pushkar is home to the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in the whole world. Hindus consider a journey to Pushkar to be the ultimate pilgrimage that must be undertaken to attain salvation

India’s incredible Heritage : Sanchi Stup. Then (1875) & Now.

Sanchi is located in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is a Buddhist pilgrimage site of an international importance. This great stupa and the other monuments at site were declared “World Heritage” by UNESCO.

Looking at these photographs, taken around 150 years apart shows that significant work was done by @asi.goi to preserve these incredible monuments of India’s glorious past.

History of the Stupa.
.
The great stupa of Sanchi is the most important surviving monument of the Shunga era (c.185-75 BC). It consists of a large hemispherical dome which was built over an already existing stupa ascribed to the 3rd century BC under the reign of the Buddhist emperor Ashoka Maurya (c.269-232 BC). Four elaborately carved gateways or torana were added to the stupa during the 1st century BC. .
